Maps of Pamukkale

Pamukkale is in a very rural part of Turkey, as you can see from this map there is a large amount of open countryside in the area.  The nearest major city is Denzili, 20 km to the south, which has a small airport called Cardak Airport. This is a 1 hour flight from Istanbul.

The town of Pamukkale is at the base of the travertine terraces while the roman city ruins are at the top. If staying in the town then you will be approaching the hot springs from the west and walking up the gentle hill to the summit. This is the best view and is quiet if done in the morning before 11am or in the afternoon after 4pm.

When visiting Pamukkale as a day trip your coach will arrive at the hill top either North or South entrance gates. After going through the gateway your guide will take you past the historic relics to the centrally located Antique Pool Spa which is an additional fee, or you may walk yourself down the travertine terraces.

The white tavertine can easily be seen in this satellite image as a bright white area. To the upper right or east are the ruins.

Antique Pool

Situated above the Pamukkale white travertine pools is one particularly spectacular location fed by the same hot springs. Here you can bath in the same waters in which Cleopatra once swam! A professionally run modern spa facility allows you to enjoy these historical healing waters.

Unlike the white water of the lower pools the Antique Pool favored by Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, is pure clear warm water. Once it was surmounted by a Roman Temple to Apollo with ornate roof held up with Doric columns. Imagine how Cleopatra must have experienced this when you imagine it in it's glory day.
